Our Company:

Cascade Vacation Rentals offers the largest selection of vacation rental homes on Minnesota's North Shore of Lake Superior. Our rentals cover a large area from Two Harbors north to Grand Portage and inland up the Caribou and Gunflint Trails.  We have been managing many of these homes for nearly 20 years.   Our guests return year after year because they appreciate the privacy and relaxation offered by a lakeside home or woods cabin.  You don't have to take our word for it, we've been recognized by many news sources for our unique vacation options: Minneapolis Star Tribune, KSTP News, Mpls/St. Paul Magazine, StarTribune.com, Star Tribune Pet Central, MidwestWeekends.com, and others.

Steve and Kate Surbaugh, Owners

Steve and Kate are originally from Indiana and Illinois, but they fell in love with Northern Minnesota on a college canoe trip.  After several years of guiding canoe and dogsled trips in the Boundary Waters, they settled in Grand Marais.  They bought Cascade Vacation Rentals (originally Superior Properties) from the original owner about 6 years ago.  It has continued to grow and flourish and they are grateful to have the means to live in the place they love.  Today they share an old farmstead near the Cascade River with their 3 children, 20 chickens, and 1 dog.  Read more about our family in this great article from the Mpls Star Tribune. 

Tala Joy Marxen, Rental Manager

Kris Buttweiler, Marketing and Special Projects

Kris is originally from Maple Grove, Minnesota.  After graduating from Bemidji State University, she and her husband moved to the cities for a few years, completed their masters degrees and then moved to Lutsen.  She loves to cook, bake, tend to her vegetable and flower gardens, golf, ski and snowshoe. She and her husband Joe have a very energetic 3 year old son and a yellow lab.
